This week in our Itty Bitty class we had an invasion of nature. Their first activity was to choose some foliage pieces, lay it on the paper and spray, spray, spray. Little hands love to squeeze a spray bottle, and most of their trays got totally saturated with the color. That's OK! Because it ended up resulting in a beautiful, unique display of color bursts for each child.
The magic here was that the bottles were all filled with different groupings of dried out, dead markers. I have been collecting them for a while now, and all I did was separate them by color, pop them into the bottle and add some water. It pulled out all that extra pigment!
Next, we made our way to the big table which I had covered in brown kraft paper. Here they had more leaves, some pine branches, and daisies I had picked that morning. The invitation was completely open ended: Paint on, Paint with, just Paint!
I provided a palette of tempura paints for each child, simply put into salvaged egg cartons, a brush, and some of my favorite paint sticks. Some children drew on the paper with the sticks, others brushed paint onto the leaves. I encouraged the latter to try pressing their leaves onto a piece of white paper to see what happened. As you can tell, the results are just stunning. Everyone got paint on their hands, and a smile on their face.
